An Overview of Maintenance at OBA
The modern facility totals about 10,000 square feet in area. Half of it, the main maintenance hangar, is 5,000 square feet in area. The other 5,000 square feet is divided up into a dedicated "clean room" engine shop, a large and fully stocked parts department, and several other separate, ancillary areas for parts cleaning, electrical testing and other uses. Parts are delivered on a daily basis.
According to stringent FAA regulations, any aircraft which is flown for hire must have a written list of items to be completely inspected every 100 hours of operation. Ormond Beach Aviation complies totally with this requirement, and in fact, far surpasses it. For instance, for our fleet of Cessna 150s, we have used our years of experience to develop a proprietary checklist of over 130 separate line items, and this results in a far more thorough and in-depth safety inspection than required by the official regulations.
Each Cessna 100 hour inspection requires on the average 12 hours of direct labor per aircraft, and that is assuming no faults to be corrected. In addition to the items you would expect (oil change, filter, check tyre pressures, fluid levels, clean and gap spark plugs, check and test brakes, nose strut extension and pressure, correct operation and range of all engine and flight controls), there are dozens and dozens of other safety-related items (complete differential compression test, magneto timing check, replace air filter, check primer operation, verify all safety wiring, check shimmy dampener, remove all inspection panels - and there are a LOT of them! - check avionics, lubricate all cables, rod ends, pulleys, check control surface travel, check/change vacuum filter, test all lights, and much more!), all of which are fully checked and then signed off before the aircraft is returned to service.
The extent of these inspections is often not appreciated. If this were your automobile, and you drove ten hours a week (not very much, nowadays), this would mean that every two and a half months or so, you would spend almost two solid days tearing your car apart and just checking things! Anything that needed to be fixed would add to this time. Most people don't even check their tyre pressures every two and a half months. As you see, aircraft maintence is a serious business, and we fully regard it as such here at Ormond Beach Aviation.
