Florida Map, Florida Climate

Florida has a semi-tropical climate. It becomes quite warm and rather humid during the months of June, July and August. Expect temperatures to exceed 90 degrees F (32 C) and humidity to hover near 90 percent. Even though these temperatures sound rather high, virtually every structure in Florida is air-conditioned, so it doesn't matter anyway. The most pleasant weather is usually found during winter months between October and May when temperatures are more likely around 75 degrees (25 C) and the humidity becomes much less noticeable. Florida's winter climate can only be described as delightful.

It rains nearly every day in most months (less during the winter), but the showers are generally local and short, and the sun quickly reappears. Hurricane season "officially" lasts from August through late October. During these months, these tropical storms can bring dangerously high winds and inundating rainfalls. Due to excellent weather forecasting and frenzied non-stop media coverage, the warning time can be up to a full week. When (if) the storm actually does arrive (most of them hammer the islands in the Caribbean, then turn north and blow harmlessly into the Atlantic, missing Florida entirely), everyone is totally prepared, and the usual damage is mostly downed trees and power lines. 24 hours later, the sky is blue again.

Nature has not endowed Florida with many mountains, rolling hills or panoramic vistas; the terrain is rather flat. It does, however boast gorgeous white sand beaches and blue lagoons lined with palm trees and tropical flora.

An archipelago of thousands of small islands, known as "the Keys" stretch along coral reefs over 150 miles below the southern tip of Florida. It is possible to drive "over the ocean" on 42 bridges and causeways connecting the keys until you reach Key West 119 miles out on the Gulf of Mexico.

Over 1000 square miles of swampy grassland, known as the Everglades, cover the lower tip of the peninsula. It is teeming with tropical birds, animals and fishes.
